France had control of Louisiana in the 16th Century. Louisiana got their name after King Louis XIV (the fourteenth), La Louisiane.

Whoever had ownership of this land, controlled the Mississippi River.
The French and Indian War between France and Great Britain was 7 years long. France feared that they were going to lose the war, but didn’t want Louisiana in the hands of Great Britain. Therefore, King Louis XIV transferred the territory to his cousin King Charles III to keep it out of the hands of Great Britain. Although, this was a secret that nobody knew about until France lost the war to Great Britain.
