King Charles III of Spain
The King of France, King Louis XIV transferred the Louisiana territory to his cousin King Charles III in 1763 due to fear that Great Britain would gain control of the land in the French and Indian War.

When France transferred the territory to Spain it was a secret known as the “family compact”. Spain gained the territory three-months prior to the treaties which ended this seven-year war between France and Great Britain.

In 1801, Spain signed a secret treaty with France to return the territory of Louisiana. The treaty that ensured Louisiana was given back to France was known as the Third Treaty of San Ildefonso.
