The United States of America gained control of Louisiana in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase from French leader Napoleon Bonaparte, when he gave up plans for reestablishing a French empire in America.
The United States gained Louisiana from France for the amount of $15 million and acquired approximately 828,000 square miles of land.
